I had a close call with one of my dogs recently. A bazaar event that you could never have imagined taking place. Luckily, everything turned out just fine, but the event got me to wondering if there is a vet in town (Pittsboro) that would be able to handle an emergency call here, rather than refer me to the 24 hour facility in Cary? Thanks,JanP.S. Make sure your "S" hooks on collars don't have any gaps!

I think everyone who has volunteered to pick up trash along our road sides is to be commended. However, the problem has gotten so bad that I would think that prevention should be the key issue here.
I'm with the person who wanted to put up cameras along his/her property and convict and punish litterers.
If more people were held responsible for their littering, perhaps the problem would diminish. I would propose that all community service workers be assigned trash pick up so they can see the scope of the problem. I think anyone convicted of littering (is that even happening these days? I know law enforcement officers have more important things to do than arrest litterbugs!) should be assigned a sentence of a minimum of 30 full days of trash pick up. Perhaps cleaning up after everyone else may make them think twice about littering again!

-------------------- 6 -------------------- Date: Thu, 8 Feb 2007 09:49:54 -0500 From: "Pets To Posies" Subject: High Speed Internet
Has anyone received a definitive answer about high speed internet service for our rural areas?
Embarq has a contact form on their website and perhaps people should use it to let Embarq know just how much the service is needed. It's gotten to the point that doing anything on the net with dial-up is an agonizingly slow process consuming way more time that it should. The internet definitely caters to the high speed world leaving the rest of us behind!
The Embarq site is:
http://www.embarq.com/Portal/embarq.portal
Just go to the Residential section, then down to Support then the Contact Us link.
If anyone gets a definitive response or has a viable alternative to the phone company, please post here on the Chatlist.

If you are using earthlink's white-list spam blocker and you send someone an email off-list, remember to add that person to your white-list. Not much is more annoying than replying to an email YOU SENT ME and getting back an automated reply from Earthlink telling me I can't reply to you because you only accept email from pre-approved users, so click on this link to go to a webpage asking you to pre-approve my email. No. You emailed me. I'm not going to jump through hoops to respond.

"Does anyone know of an attorney in Chatham County who would be willing to provide guidance in regards to parent/student rights in public education with a few concerned parents and educators?"
IMO Atty Ed Holmes is the best local attorney for the job. I do not know if his previous work for the Chatham schools would have him turn this work down or not. If nothing else he will know who the folks are who do that kind of work.

Reply to # 3 Alterations needed...I use Fashion Tailors in Plantation Plaza in Carrboro on 54...they can do quick turn around if you stress how important it is...I was there one day and there was a customer that needed a dress hemmed for the next day. They accommodated her for this, but the usual turn around time for me has been 2 to 3 days.
-------------------- 13 -------------------- Date: Thu, 8 Feb 2007 13:14:22 -0500 From: "Mary Honeycutt" Subject: Costs of Heating Fuel--Can't believe how some do business!
We heat with gas mostly and the price of a fill-up has gone higher and higher. Recently we talked with a neighbor who is getting a much better deal than us so we decided to call around. Not too surprising we found a range of pricing but here's the shocker. Some companies charge some customers more than some of their other customers. Same gas, same truck, different per gallon charge. We just got a fill-up, 300 plus gallons at $2.72 a gallon. Another place is charging $1.95 same product. I called to have my service discontinued with the High-price-leader and guess what? They dropped the price to $1.85 a gallon. Well that's all good except look at the profit they have been getting from us for years and how about those who really suffer the burden of high prices? If you buy heating fuel it might pay to compare prices. Tanks can be removed with the same equipment that put them in and if enough of us did better cost comparisons we might all get a better deal. I for one am sick of t he oil business in general with record profits at a time when so many struggle. Oh yea, turn those thermostats down a notch or too as well and let the company keep some of the precious stuff! --Aaron Honeycutt

-------------------- 15 -------------------- Date: Thu, 8 Feb 2007 18:17:28 -0500 From: "Mark Stinson" < Subject: move toward sanity
A proposition today was made in Wake County for consideration to abolish property taxes all together . The plan will implement a flat sales tax across the board that is the same percentage rate as the current sales tax but on everything you buy . Only 27% of the things you buy are taxed now . I had a discussion with a friend several years ago about the economic feasibility of such a plan . It will reduce certain expenditures related to collecting property taxes . It eliminates certain jobs and will generate more money than conventional property tax based plans . Everyone wins . There are several states that have used this type of revenue policy since their inception into statehood . They have no property taxes and people don't struggle to pay property taxes or get evicted from their homes . I personally believe property taxes are communistic in nature and I will explain why . In some communist countries you cant legally own real estate . You cant legally own real estate here either . When you buy real estate here you only pay for the right to use it . I can prove this . You pay sales tax on it when you buy it ( rent deposit ) , and if you don't pay property taxes ( rent ) even though you bought the property ,, the county like a communist government can seize the property and sell it . This means ,, you buy the right to use it but must pay ( rent in the form of taxes ) or just like when you don't pay the rent ,, you get evicted . This is clearly against what our founding fathers had in mind when the country was formed . I believe all forms of property taxes should be outlawed . A flat sales tax plus a possible county income tax of 1% would give us a county budget with a surplus . I did some digging and sent the data I have on county spending and revenues to be analyzed to see what the real numbers will be . I know the first argument by developers will be the extra sales tax will run the price of homes up. My opinion is it will make owning a hom e here look more desirable as there will be no property tax. The more expensive a home is the more the tax will be when you buy it so it will not hurt young families starting out . It will make the purchase and renovation of older homes more desirable. Most young families are on a tight budget and wont be buying a $750,000 home . It will be fair because land valued less will be taxed less ,, land valued more taxed more at the time of sale . The areas where land is at a premium will generate their fair share of the tax base during the development stages and with the additional revenue from sales from stores ,, services and other taxable items . I believe we can do this .. Its not like it isn't being done in other states ,, it is . We will just be making a move to a sainer world . Goodnite Mark

Does this article contain a blueprint for Pittsboro?
A few quotes:
"One of the ways those involved in the revitalization hope to bring more people and businesses into downtown is to make it more aesthetically pleasing. The new crosswalks are part of that. The town also is offering financial assistance to existing businesses wanting to enhance their building facades."
###
"Many people involved in professions such as the arts, consulting and a variety of entrepreneurial endeavors have flexibility in where they can work and live, particularly when technology such as telecommuting is available, allowing them to move out of urban centers. An aging generation is also looking for affordable, appealing places to retire to, she said."
###
"Downtown is important to small towns, Simpson said.
"Downtown is their heart and soul," he said. "It's their reason for their being. It's also potentially their core of their tax base too. If their downtown tax base starts dying, it sort of permeates through the rest of the town."
In addition to bringing more businesses into downtown, Condon said the resident committee is also considering projects involving businesses in the N.C. 11 corridor, developing eco-heritage and eco-tourism activities relating to Contentnea Creek and expanding youth programs." ###
