Subject: RE: moving to Chatham

Dear Samantha, Thank you for choosing Chatham as your new home. I think you will find Chapel Ridge to be a beautiful location for your family. As with all new top end developements the construction confusion is in full tilt but now is certainly the time to get in on the first phases. I haven't seen many children in the developement but then again most of the newcomers are affluent middle aged to retirees. That will change quickly as younger couples take advantage of what we hope to be a crown jewel in Chatham. Chapel Ridge was recently blessed with the birth of a baby boy, Marco Giovonni, at the home adjacent to the house I am currently working in. So yes there will be children. I hope you were able to attend the open house held this weekend and see for yourself where this developement will be headed in the future. As for schools in Pittsboro I cannot testify but Chatham Charter located 15 minutes west in Siler City is an excellent school with the best teachers and staff  you could ask for. I sincerely hope you give them a look before you make a decision. Their number is 742-4550. If you haven't set your heart on a particular property yet I suggest you give Lisa Schumpija a call at Realty World Carolina Properties (542-9911) as she has several beautiful pieces listed in that developement. She's a good agent and you can trust her.

Subject: Building Downtown

Happy Monday, everybody!

Just a little side note about the vacant building downtown...I called the listing realty several months ago to inquire about it for my business and I remember that it was in the $300,000 range (give or take $50,000) and the realtor advised me that it would most likely need to be gutted and rebuilt.  I'm sure that's not really an issue for a larger company, but I have a feeling that has contributed to the building's continued vacancy, at least as far as local businesses are concerned.

Have a great day!

Subject: Reply to Unethical Medical Billing in PBO???

I have NEVER responded to the chatlist but this post required me to do so.

I have been a patient at Pittsboro Family Medicine since it opened years ago when Dr. Corey was the only doctor there and they were located in the little office next to Food Lion.  I went there for my prenatal care too and Dr Burgert delivered my little girl four years ago.  He is the greatest doctor I have ever had and I do believe that Ms. Shook should think again before bashing this medical practice.  All of the staff, nurses and doctors there are fabulous, they treat you like they CARE (which you don't get a lot these days at busy doctor's offices) and they all know my family by name.  When my little girl was diagnosed with a brain tumor two years ago Dr. Burgert was there with us the day they took her back to surgery and visited her EVERY DAY in the hospital.  He also called almost weekly to check on her as she was undergoing treatment.  He's a doctor who genuinely cares for his patients.  Our family loves him.

Lady, don't talk about stuff you don't know about.  Before you go accusing someone of unethical practices maybe you should talk to the patients he cares for.  As long as Dr. Burgert is at Pittsboro Family Medicine that is where my family will go.

Emily Judge

Subject: Low Cost Animal Spay and Neuter

Pet overpopulation is at crisis levels in Chatham County.  There simply aren’t enough good homes for all the dogs and cats born here every year.  We all bear the burden of this problem through increased costs for animal control.

Benefits of spaying or neutering go beyond population control.  Fixed animals behave better and are healthier, including having reduced risks for many cancers.

Many folks recognize the benefits of fixing their pets but cannot afford to do so.  To help, Chatham Animal Rescue and Education is offering subsidized spay/neuter clinics for Chatham County residents on public assistance or with household incomes below $40,000.  Surgery will be done by Dr. Wendy Royce of Pet Overpopulation Patrol, a mobile veterinary practice, at the Wal-Mart in Siler City.  A $20 co-pay per animal is required at registration.  Please bring proof of income.

The next surgery dates are March 3rd and March 24th. Registration will take place Saturday, February 17th, from 9 to 12 at the Chatham County Animal Shelter on County Landfill Road. This will coincide with the county rabies clinic at the shelter.

Be part of the solution.  Get your dog or cat fixed!

Perhaps Sarah's point was being charged for doing nothing more than filling out papers and sitting in the waiting room, but never having been seen/given the time for which she'd made an appointment, which apparently was double booked.

" ... As I sat down, wondering why I was filling out paperwork when I was  just there to TALK, a woman approached the desk and informed the receptionist that she was there for a 1pm appointment with Dr. Burgert.
Apparently, my brief chat was not going to be priority.  I completed the paperwork and handed it to the woman at the desk.   She looked at the information and said, "Wait, this information is for Jonah? Who are we seeing today?"
I told her for the third time that it was not an official office visit, I was simply there to TALK with Dr. Burgert.  She told me to have a  seat and she would call me in a moment.
I watched through the window as she conferred with her fellow employees, who seemed equally befuddled at my rather simple situation. About 5 minutes later, I was called up by another woman who looked mortified to say what she did: "The doctor's schedule is completely full today.  What he would like to do is have you go ahead and register Jonah and charge   you for   an   office   visit.... ?"  She ended it like a question, so I'm assuming she realized how completely PREPOSTROUS what Dr. Burgert was suggesting was.
"You mean he wants to charge me for an office visit because I  filled out some paperwork when he's not even going to give me 10 MINUTES of  his time, much less actually examine my son.  Um, no thank you." ....

I 'd like to contribute my two cents on the Sudsy Dog dogwash in Pittsboro. We use it frequently and are very satisfied with it. We have a large dog; an airedale mix who weighs about 55 lbs and our daughter has a pretty large lab. We've always found the place clean and well-maintained. Our only "issue" is that we think the water could be warmer, and it  costs you a minute of your time to wait for the temperature to come up. Oh, and one time the regular shampoo was out and we had to use flea & tick instead. It costs us $55
+ to have our dog groomed. We're so thankful to have
the Sudsy Dog so close by: even if we have to shell out $8 or $9 to get the job done, it's totally worth it.

I think the point of fraudulent practice that my wife pointed out that fell on deaf eyes, is that she was going to be billed for just sitting in the waiting room.

I however encourage anyone who wants to sit in my parking lot for 30 mins and doesn't mind being charged for a few gallons of paint as a result, to come on down. I could use the cash.

Minority Achievement Awards Celebration Planned

The academic success of every student not only contributes to the overall success of the educational system, but to the community as well.
Students who succeed in school become valued contributing members of our society.
The Chatham County Raising Achievement/Closing Gaps Task Force has been working for the past two years in finding ways to help minority students raise their achievement and become academically successful.
The group¹s mission is to ³come together as a bridge between the community and education system to create a community that supports each child to excel academically and to reach their potential by preparing them to take advantage of all opportunities to achieve their goals.²
Once again, the group is hosting the Minority Achievement Awards Celebration for minority students who have achieved a passing grade on the state's End of Grade tests.  This year¹s celebration, the group¹s second, will be held on Saturday, February 24 beginning at 10:00 at Northwood High School and 3:00 at Jordan-Matthews High School.
³We had such a great response from the community last year that we decided to hold another and make it an annual event,² said Nancy Harman, the group¹s co-chair.  Last year, almost 900 students and family members attended the two events.
³This year, we have over 950 students eligible for awards,² said Mary Harris of the school system.  ³Each family will get an individual invitation to the celebration site closest to their home.  We hope to have standing room only in the auditoriums,² she continued.
³Students honored will have an opportunity to come to the podium, state their name and receive a medallion signifying their accomplishment,² said George Greger-Holt, member of the task force.  In addition, participants will be treated to entertainment and a special guest speaker, Mervin Jenkins, principal at Horton Middle School. A reception for the students and their guests will follow.
Dr. Ann Hart, superintendent of Chatham County Schools, has been an avid supporter of the group¹s mission.  ³Any way we can support students and families and recognize success strengthens their path to student achievement,² she added.
Contributions to the event can be made payable to the Chatham Education Foundation and can be sent care of Mary Harris, Chatham County Schools, PO Box 128, Pittsboro.

Subject: Medical Billing

Just in case I was not clear the first time, I will simply quote here two sentences from my original post:

QUOTE:
"I make no claim of familiarity with medical insurance procedures, but that behavior SEEMS to border on fraudulent.  At best, it's completely unethical."

Note the "SEEMS" in all caps.
I am not throwing accusations around anywhere at anyone.  I have nothing personal against the good Dr. Burgert.  And I even understand how one might be charged a consultation fee with a medical professional.  Certainly!
And IF the doctor had actually SEEN me, I would understand a fee being incurred.
I was told I was to be charged when I had not even SEEN the man.
This was the problem in the first place.
I was at no point ushered into an examining room or office.
At no point did I speak with Dr. Burgert or EVEN a nurse.
Yet I was to be charged for a "visit" with Dr. Burgert that NEVER OCCURED.
I do say: 'touche' to everyone with the very valid point about paying a doctor for his time.
I would have gladly paid the doctor for his time had he actually given it to me!!!

>Does anyone know seriously how to optimize keywords and keyword phrases

a web site?

Jim -

First, keywords on a web page are now very low in importance for Web sites.
Many other things matter more. I've read a lot of google documents discussing optimization, and several search optimization texts. IMO, if you are looking to get decent rankings for something that includes location, you can get high results with proper procedures. For instance, I've gotten Hillcreek Vet top billing for "pittsboro vet", top billing for Chatham Animal Rescue with "animal rescue nc", and onto the first page for Allied Mortgage of Cary for "mortgage cary nc". For less common stuff, you can also do pretty good - I'm flirting with first page results for Lumby Books with "lumby" keyword, even though I'm competing with real life Lumby towns. I've also got top billing for an architect using his name as keyword, and an author using her name as keyword. However, to crack top few pages for something like "mortgage", "toys", etc - you're talking tens of thousands of dollars worth of intense work.

My customers aren't into spending tens of thousands (darn), so I have put together a little list for cost-effective optimization. It usually takes me
4-5 hours to get it done, depending on size of site. (Sorry, I don't want to share it, really, as it's really just notes that are indecipherable to anyone but me, and would take a lot of effort to make usable by others.)

Anyway, if you want to do it yourself, search the internet for search engine documents, particularly from/about google. If you want to bounce something off me, just send me an email. Whatever you do, DO NOT pay someone who promises to get you top billing - you're better off buying a lottery ticket.

I had Hughes long time ago, when it was just one-way, and that was bad. I haven't heard anything good about it. But, as for Embarq...careful what you wish for, it may come true! Heh heh. Actually, Embarq (we've had it for a year or so now) is a huge leap over what we had before, and service ain't bad (they replaced a modem for me already). That said, I do frequent modem reboots, and performance might just unroll my socks a bit - not close to knocking them off. It's much better than dial up, much better than Hughes, but would be at the bottom for DSL/Cable performance.

Dear 4-H Alumni,

Driving North Carolina's highways and glancing at license plates, one can identify what organization or "cause" the driver takes pride in. Now is your chance to own a 4-H specialty license plate and help North Carolina 4-H "Drive Into the Future!"

The Division of Motor Vehicles has been authorized to create a 4-H specialty license plate. Proceeds from these plates will be used to help 4-H camps as well as county and state 4-H programs. The Division of Motor Vehicles will not issue these special license plates until 300 people have pre-registered through the North Carolina 4-H Development Fund. As you can see, getting those first 300 applications and fees is vital. I just called to get my tank filled & was told for 99 gallons it would be over $300. I told her I called around and that wasn't acceptable. she asked if i used my gas for anything other than heat, which i do not & then agree to lower the price to $1.85. This is absolute insanity. I am new to using gas for heat & never would have guessed you can haggle them on the price.

She also told me i could lock in at a price during the summer, so when it gets really low, i can get the price year round.. so, call & check the prices... then lock in when its rock bottom.

I can't believe they take advantage of people like this. Thanks to the chatlist, I am not one of those people!!!

Subject: Costs of Heating Fuel--Can't believe how some do business!

We heat with gas mostly and the price of a fill-up has gone higher and higher. Recently we talked with a neighbor who is getting a much better deal than us so we decided to call around. Not too surprising we found a range of pricing but here's the shocker. Some companies charge some customers more than some of their other customers. Same gas, same truck, different per gallon charge. We just got a fill-up, 300 plus gallons at $2.72 a gallon.
Another place is charging $1.95 same product. I called to have my service discontinued with the High-price-leader and guess what? They dropped the price to $1.85 a gallon. Well that's all good except look at the profit they have been getting from us for years and how about those who really suffer the burden of high prices? If you buy heating fuel it might pay to compare prices. Tanks can be removed with the same equipment that put them in and if enough of us did better cost comparisons we might all get a better deal. I for one am sick of the oil business in general with record profits at a time when so many struggle. Oh yea, turn those thermostats down a notch or too as well and let the company keep some of the precious stuff! --Aaron Honeycutt

Subject: Clock Repair

Recently, an inquiry was made re a clock repair person.  I can recommend Philip Knapp -851-8247.  He has fixed two clock for me and makes house calls.  He knows his business and is very reasonable - comes when he says he will.  He is the President of an organization here in NC of clock makers or clock repairers - not sure exactly the title.

Task Force Hears About Transfer Tax

BY FLORENCE GILKESON: SENIOR WRITER

A Moore County Summit committee learned firsthand Friday what it's like to provide capital improvements in counties with "more money than they know what to do with."

Two members of the Chatham County Board of Commissioners presented their findings on a land-transfer fee during a Friday morning meeting of the Summit task force on alternative revenue sources.

"A 1 percent transfer fee sounded like pie in the sky," said Chatham Commissioner Patrick Barnes, who was impressed with the results enjoyed by the six relatively small counties that have imposed such fees.

Chatham Commissioner Mike Cross said that his county is scrambling to find money to build three schools and a courthouse. He said Chatham County has no sewer system and is struggling to get water districts started.

Barnes toured all six counties that have land-transfer fees to see what they were doing with the money and how they were faring from a development standpoint.

The six counties are clustered at the coast.

'Missing the Boat'

Barnes, a general contractor for commercial buildings, admitted he was blown away by the prosperity reflected in these counties. He said the school buildings were "gorgeous" as well as clean and well-maintained.

"Chatham has no lighted ball field, but their ball field was lit up better than the Charlotte Motor Speedway," he said of one county.
