> Subject: Re: Litter
Surveillance ( confirmed by spell-check) cameras are not terribly expensive to purchase. A thief was apprehended on my property with the help of one. Reviewing all the footage and using the evidence to convict might have to be a full time job for someone....and their lawyer. If one can manipulate the legal system for other traffic violations, why would a littering ticket be any different? Although I don't have my own trash story to tell on the Chatlist it still bothers me that some folks think the world is their trashcan and ashtray. Those attitudes need to change. For that I don't know what to offer up other than a show of folks picking up the litter. What could help out is if the choices of community service would exclude all but roadside clean-up. Why can't prisoners be used for this purpose? My post offering to employ people to pick up litter produced only one response. The offer still stands anyway.

quick note: Linda Petty (does upholstery, etc) is no longer at the 542 0584 number, to my knowledge. I believe she's trying to move her shop out to Silk Hope. But Ron, her husband, probably is still at this number, and can most likely give you a contact number. D Bair

I think it's great that people are defending their local doctor's office, especially the doctors, who I've never had a problem with personally, but I did have big, annoying, difficult (to the point that I ended up in tears) problems with the front office staff before I quit taking my children there. I also never saw a doctor or nurse within 45 minutes of my appointment and every time I needed an emergency visit I was either told no or I had to wait up to 3 hours in the office with a sick child. The one time I tried to have a well-woman check-up I waited and hour and a half (for a scheduled appointment) and when I told the nurse who checked me in that I had to leave b/c I'd only booked my babysitter for 2 hours the Nurse Practitioner with whom I'd had my appointment said, in a very loud voice right outside my door that I was being ridiculous. They are busy. They are part of a larger bureaucracy, which no doubt impacts how they operate. But despite all the love letters to the contrary, the original poster's bad experience with the front office was in no way isolated. Luckily, there are other doctors in town who have front office people who are helpful and wonderful. Adrienne Bashista

I agree with several things: those supporting the fine docs at Pittsboro Family Medicine, those who are cautioning about the use of the word 'fraudulent', as well as with the right of Ms. Shook to actually have seen the doc before getting billed(!) -- But I have to tell you, Eric Shook's response (below) made me laugh out loud. So maybe we should all just let this go now ...
"I think the point of fraudulent practice that my wife pointed out that fell on deaf eyes, is that she was going to be billed for just sitting in the waiting room.
I however encourage anyone who wants to sit in my parking lot for 30 mins and doesn't mind being charged for a few gallons of paint as a result, to come on down. I could use the cash.."

This orangish tabby, male who has just been given a clean bill of health from the vet and is scheduled to be fixed on friday is in need of a good home. The vet estimates his age to be about 5 to 6 months. I discovered him in my shop a few days ago and he is very people friendly. No neighbor is claiming him and my fear is that he has been abandoned on our land. We would keep him but we have three cats and two dogs and none of them were impressed by this cats charm. If you are interested You can contact Candace who is fostering this cat until a home can be found. Leave a message on her phone. 542-6194 thanks. Jim

I am one of those people who cannot get Embarq or cable and have to use Hughes. I have upgraded to the business satellite and have been very pleased. Although, much more expensive, it has never once even gone out during a storm like my TV does, et cetera. I have been very happy with it.
On the other hand, I have been on every list, made thousands of phone calls, et cetera to previously Sprint and now Embarq to have high speed internet out this way. I always get the same reply "approx. six more months". Well, six more months has now been going on for 5 years.
Why don't we all start calling the cable company? Maybe they would start considering it if everyone started requested it.
Just my 2 cents!

FOR NONPROFITS ONLY: There is a nonprofit company that offers low cost IT and Web site services in Greensboro, and they are interested in serving Chatham County, also. I've attended the $10, two-hour class and found it to be very helpful for our office where there are 14 computers and lots of volunteers coming through. The company, netCorps, www.netCorps.org has asked me to conduct an informal poll of the nonprofits in Chatham County to find out if 15 to 20 people would be interested in this class. Please e-mail me off this list if your nonprofit would be interested in attending this class, or if you have any questions. Thanks!

-------------------- 10 -------------------- Date: Wed, 14 Feb 2007 15:13:05 -0500 From: "Kay Hamrick" Subject: Chatham Emergency Vet Care
I am replying to a post from Phyllis Thomas about emergency vet care at Tri-County Vet.
I have taken my dog to Tri-County Vet on Highway 87 for about 12 years. I am very happy with the doctors and staff there and the care they have given over the years. However, they do not have 24 hour emergency care. At least they didn't last week.
Our dog went in to a violent seizure about midnight on Tuesday and the on-call vet at Tri-County would only refer us to an all night clinic in either Burlington or Durham. We chose Burlington because it was the closest, but it still took us more than 45 minutes to get her there and she was in seizure the whole time.
The clinic in Burlington was also very expensive. We were there about an hour and it cost us more than $500.
Please don't misunderstand - this is not a criticism of Tri-County's doctors, staff, or care of my pet, but please do not rely on them for 24-hour emergency service.
Because of last week's trauma I, too, am very interested to hear if there really is emergency vet care closer to home and hope to see this information posted here on the chatlist.

I tried to contact Linda Petty as I need a couple of slipcovers done. Apparently she no longer lives at that telephone number. I left my number with the person who answered the phone and was told she would get in touch with me. That was several days ago and I have yet to hear from her. Does anyone know how to reach her? Any other recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks...

-------------------- 13 -------------------- Date: Wed, 14 Feb 2007 14:33:33 -0800 (PST) From: Hope Crossing Animal Hospital Subject: Emergency Veterinary Service
I would like to discuss the emergency services question posted earlier. Hope Crossing Animal Hospital offers after-hours emergency services until 11:00 pm. This is not only for the clients of Hope Crossing Animal Hospital, but for anybody with a sick animal. There are benefits and limitations to what can be done at some veterinary hospitals after hours, however. There are no vets in Chatham county that offer 24 hour care. First, it is just too expensive, especially when you have the Veterinary Specialty Hospital, The Vet School, Triangle Pet Emergency and Treatment Service, and the After-Hours Emergency Service all in Raleigh, Durham and Cary. There will not likely be enough demand in this area to offer that level of care, but that may change in the future. Secondly, these offices have specialists, even emergency care specialists, who work there. It would be somewhat similar to going to the ER and seeing the family practice doctor there. You just don't expect that. Emergency care is what they focus on and is their niche. They can also call in their colleagues (other specialists) for a consultation without much fuss. Third, even when we offer after-hours emergency care, the doctor does not live at the practice. He goes home to his wife and children. If your pet needs to be hospitilized, then soon after you leave, the doctor may leave as well. He or she may go back later in the night to check on them (I have come back at 2:00am many times, just to be sure they are OK) but nobody is there 24/7. If your pet crashes, pulls the IV, or makes a mess, it won't be found until the staff returns in the morning. Overall, if it is a minor problem that cannot wait until the morning and will not require hospitilization, then offering after-hours service is a fine thing to provide, if the hospital decides to. However, if your pet is so sick that it really can't wait till the morning, then 24 hour care is probably what it needs. I hope this helps explain the rationale behind our decision to offer after-hours emergency services. If you have any questions or I can be more clearly, do not hesitate to call the office or shoot us an email. You can also check out our website for more information, too! -------------------- 14 -------------------- Date: Wed, 14 Feb 2007 14:53:24 -0800 (PST) From: Hope Crossing Animal Hospital Subject: Help with strays
Hi again, Laura- Sorry this did not get addressed in the last email: As far as help with strays is concerned, what kind of "help" are you looking for? Very often, Dr. Webster will help out by doing a spay/neuter at a reduced rate for a stray. We also try and help with the cost of getting the stray animal vaccinated. There are times that we will assist in finding a new home for that animal. We have had several posts on the Chatlist regarding strays and animals for adoption. We currently have a cat that is VERY ferral, that we did a reduced cost neuter for and have housed him for almost 2 weeks (at personal risk, as he is NOT friendly) waiting to decide what to do with him. We can not afford to do all of this for free. That is a wonderful thought, but the doctor has overhead costs to cover, and has to be able to pay for the building and the practice to run. We are always willing to try and help our clients as well as the community at large. We do work with CARE to provide medical services to their fosters so that they can be adopted. We also are on the list of providers for the Chatham County Animal Control, to do thier spays/neuters. I can not speak for all the vets in the area, but I can tell you that sometimes it is not advertised, and you have to ask if there is something that can be worked out. I know that Dr. Webster is almost always willing to work with honest people to help the community. Come by anytime and see us! Dear Ms. Judge, I also have heard that Dr. Burgert is an excellent prenatal care physician from MANY people (including his own staff) and I have no doubt about it. I was also very glad to hear about his care specifically for your daughter. He REALLY went above and beyond what any doctor has to for the sake of his patient and I am glad for that. I'm sure it was a much needed feeling of support in a difficult time. There's no need to get snippy and call me "lady". I have never even met you. Your experience was very different than mine, I understand that (and am happy for your sake!). For you to take offense and make spiteful remarks just because I disagree with you is an emotional response, not a logical one. We're adults here. There's no reason for there to be any hard feelings between us. After all, you and I are both mothers and that, more than ANYthing, should bring us together, not separate us!
Humbly yours, Sarah M. Shook
PS For all readers of the Chatlist, I have heard glowing reports on Dr. Burgert as both a prenatal care provider and a physician in general. I'm sure he is a good man and I wish him and his family all the best! :)
-------------------- 16 -------------------- Date: Wed, 14 Feb 2007 18:12:14 -0500 From: "Tina Meeks" Subject: UPDATE on TRIAL of Alltel aircard in Rural area...
Ok everyone,
I wanted to get back to everyone that has been feeling the stress and = strain of not having high speed in the rural areas of this county. Here = is my story:
I am doing a trial with the Alltel aircard Kyocera KPC650A (1xEVDO = Passport PC card). I had to buy the hardware to put in the back of my = desktop PC which cost $28 (PCI to PCMCIA Controller Card ISO-9001). The = install was very easy. I then installed the software needed to get the = aircard started; very easy! I averaged around 40kpbs (boy was I upset). = It did get as high as in the high 50s but this was at night late or = early, early morning. I was so frustrated. I didn't give up! I then = called Alltel to discuss getting a booster as recommended by Mike Fox = (thanks Mike). The Alltel rep recommended a booster that is specifically = for the aircard and the total cost was $59 but they were out of stock = for 2 weeks. I couldn't wait that long due to the trial so I got the = model number and brand and searched on Ebay. I found one, brand new for = much less. I also found out that I was 11 miles from the nearest tower.=20
Back to the booster...depending on your need, you can get an external = booster for your home or the one that you can take with you if you are = using a laptop. I found out that the higher the Gain, the better signal = strength you would get. I got the 11dB since this was the highest he = had. I got it from Cellgear-USA on Ebay, here is what you type in to = help you find it "11dB External Booster Antenna To Kyocera KPC650". It = arrived on Monday. My husband sat it in the window and we are now = getting a pretty steady speed of anywhere from 180-217kbps. WOW! What a = difference an antenna booster makes! It does change with clouds and time = of day but hey, it is better than dial-up and the 40kbps I was getting = without it.
I then went ahead and called Embarq one last time to find out if they = were anywhere near to coming to my area since they promised me 6 months = ago they would be here. Talked to 3 different people and found out they = aren't. I had previously signed up online about my interest over a year = ago so they are well aware of my want. They talked to me about possibly = getting an ISDN which is out of the question. You have to then get your = own ISP. I also talked to their aircard folks and found out they use the = same tower as Alltel and Verizon and their prices were $30/month higher.
I even talked to Matt at Blast and he said that if a home in the area = had a clear view to the sky and had a higher elevation than the land = around it, they could look at putting an antenna on that land and = letting others nearby get some high speed service (4-5 homes). He said = the equipment cost up front is expensive. He said they are trying to = expand into the rural areas but they just aren't able too at the point. = Their cost per month is $45. He said it all depends on how far out you = are as well. He said he is 4 miles outside of Pittsboro and they are = just getting service out to him. If you live in a subdivision of sorts = and this might be something you would want to do with your neighbors, = please call Matt. Matt, I hope I got this information right.=20
Well, I guess I'm going to commit to Alltel for the 2 years and see how = things go! Wish me luck!
