A recent discussion regarding litter made me think of some observations I make when picking up roadside trash. I begin to notice a pattern to the kinds of debris. I notice cigarette packs, beer bottles, fast food containers and mostly plastic bags, containers, lids, etc. I call the bulk of these items The Vice Squad. I think people are discarding their guilt out the window. The act of tossing the "evidence" being (usually) final, people feel that the object is now out of their world and now a part of the debris field. Studies have show that litter itself acts as message to those intent upon "getting rid of" their guilty feelings and sites can "grow" as more and more litter is piled up. Then regular offenders become accustomed to tossing at that site. I think continued and diligent clean by volunteers and land owners can make a difference with regular litterers. I am also concerned about the packaging that I see tossed. I think about it when I purchase fast food, or finish a soft drink in my car, not only because the packaging stays with me until I get around to cleaning it out. I wish I could use less and thus create less discarded matter. I think we should also look to our local businesses for some help in litter discouragement. We put up signs that say to drink responsibly, how about waste responsibly (oxymoron), or a reminder of the current litter laws? I often think of sending the trash I find back to the company that produced it, waste of time and postage, energy.
I am looking into surveilance cameras for my property but don't really intend to make it a big legal deal. I think our courts are already too full with trivial matters. We have bigger fish to fry in that arena. I also dread draconian littering enforcement for purely selfish reasons. 1. I take my trash to the dump every week and sometime along the way a stray bit of paper or one of those ding daggity plastic bags will slip out some how and go floating off into the tree tops or across a bog. I promise you I try to stop and get everything I can but I don't always see it. I always scan on the way home for my own debris and lately have taken to picking up the stuff that seems to linger for months. I feel my debt to society is somewhat paid by picking up others blow off.
2. It won't make any difference and will indeed make discreet littering more prevalent out of spite.
I have even thought of putting a trash can at a strategic part of my property so that those with good aim could have a spot to deposit, but based upon my observations it wouldn't be used. Dan Cahoon 72 Ruby Red Moncure, NC 27559

I am a teacher and am also a parent. I think any infraction of weapons rules in our schools should be cause for immediate expulsion from our public school system. I also think those who come to our schools and exhibit violent behavior should be removed from that environment and placed in an appropriate facility. If this happened we would see a change in the safety of our schools. Violent behavior must not be tolerated in our society. Violent children must be taught that they are responsible for their actions. There in lies the true accountability. We just need the guts to make it happen.
Yes, I know that these children also deserve an education, but my sons also deserve to have a safe environment for their education.
Stop the criminals when they are young and perhaps they will learn. Let it ride and build prisons for them later, where they will also learn.

Just wanted to clarify any confusion about whether or not flying squirrels in this area are considered "endangered" or not... they're not.
There are 4 subspecies of Northern Flying Squirrel (/Glaucomys sabrinus/), one of which occurs in NC (the Carolina Northern Flying Squirrel - /G. sabrinus/ ssp. /coloratus/). In NC, Northern Flying Squirrels are only found in high elevation forests in the mountains (see http://www.fws.gov/nc-es/mammal/cnflyings.html and http://www.fws.gov/Endangered/i/a/saa8g.html). The other 3 subspecies occur in the Pacific Northwest (California, western Canada) and Virginia/West Virginia (see http://www.iucnredlist.org/search/details.php/39553/all). For more information on Northern Flying Squirrels, see also http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northern_flying_squirrel.
Here in the Piedmont of NC we only have the Southern Flying Squirrels (/Glaucomys volans/), which are not considered rare or "endangered." For more information on Southern Flying Squirrels, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southern_flying_squirrel.
An interesting fact from the Wikipedia website that some folks may appreciate: "Southern Flying Squirrels show substantial homing <http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Homing&action=edit> abilities, and can return to their nests if artificially removed to distances of up to a kilometre. Their home ranges may be up to 40,000 square metres for females and double that for males, tending to be larger at the northern extreme of their range." So home ranges for female Southern Flying Squirrels are up to 9.8 acres in size; and up to close to 20 acres in size for males.

We live on Emily lane and are starting to have problems with break-ins as well. One neighbor's car was broken into and someone has tried to use the stolen credit cards. The police have been called and this what we know about the house on Emily lane where the alleged perpetrators are living. The residents are a bunch of teens and young adults. One of whom actually holds residence on Mt. Gilead Church Rd. Interestingly, there is often a green Mitisubshi 3000 parked at this house and we have also seen the pink mustang in the area.

Be careful of a rash of break-ins on and around Mt. Gilead Rd. There is a house down the street the police are monitoring as there are unsupervised teens living there. If you see a green mitsubishi 3000 or a pink mustang driving around your places, be on alert.

Can anyone explain to me why Northwood High Schools track is in such disrepair? My daughter just joined the track team and they had a meeting Fri. Feb. 23 to talk about Track this season. 86 kids are on the track team. That's wonderful, ONE PROBLEM>>>The track is falling apart. CRACKS, SHODDY BLOCKS and NUMEROUS other problems. Some kids have to practice on another schools track.. NO HOME TRACK MEETS at NORTHWOOD because the track is in such POOR SHAPE. What is wrong with this county for the poor upkeep at their schools. How embarrassing for these kids to not have a decent place to practice or compete. WHY are the FOOTBALL and BASEBALL FIELDS so emaculate? New uniforms while other TEAM SPORTS are left behind to wear OLD uniforms, PRACTICE, NOT COMPETE on terrible fields and tracks. Any corporations willing to do something, give a little so the kids can have pride in where they go to school or participate?

I am writing in such a state of despair. My daughter just joined the track team at Northwood. The track team had a meeting about the track team on Feb. 23. Their are 86 students on the track team. That is wonderful. The PROBLEM..Northwood CANNOT hold any TRACK MEETS at HOME because the track is in terrible condition, so terrible that kids practicing on such a poor track is an accident waiting to happen. Some kids have to travel to other schools or facilities to practice. This is horrendous. Embarrassing. Forget any new highschool that is not happening or never will be happening, these old neglected schools have to be repaired. Is their NO PRIDE for these children?? The work also needs to be done right. Not just covering up the problem. The track must totally be broken up and a new kind of track be put down. The starting blocks are old and broken, in bad shape. With no new highschools in site, what will keep happening to all the OLD highschools in Chatham County that are overcrowded now and getting worse as time goes by.?The students at these schools deserve better. Please school board members, think about our children.

For several days, a medium sized longhaired black dog has been trotting back and forth on the north side of Highway 64 West, in the area of Landfill Road. Seems to have a slight limp. Wears a wide bright red collar. AT times, it will walk across the lanes and lay down in the median- at almost the same spot. I have seen several cars stop and try to approach, but the dog always runs away- But within a half hour or hour, it is back. If you know of anyone that it might belong to, please alert them- I don't think he is going to last much longer.

I have been looking for some reaction to the BOC's decision to delay the western transmission line. I guess everybody on the east side is happy with that. I not sure that the people affected by this inappropriate decision are very happy right now. This diminutive action negating a decision of the voters by a majority whose mantra is "fair and open government" is unacceptable. As Patrick Barnes said, no matter where the water comes from, whether Harnett County or wherever, this pipeline must still be built. Further delays will only make it cost more. I therefore urge the majority to reconsider this decision at their next opportunity.
Great Idea. For a great program. I would like to encourage all the Chatlisters with children or grandchildren or great-grandchildren to contact Sarah and find the 4-H slot that fits them best. There are many interesting groups, and you don't have to be a farmer to be in 4-H The programs are grounded in a reality that is missing in many other youth activities. The competition is intense but much more friendly and more cooperative than many activities, or at least it used to be. Maybe Sarah would like to comment on that aspect. John R. Dykers Jr., MD P.O. I am researching wood stoves for our new home. Masonry seems the way to go as they heat for hours with minimal wood. Does anyone have a brand they can recommend, and has anyone had one built for them as an alternative to buying one.

A tax may be defined as "pecuniary burden laid upon individuals or property to support the government, a payment exacted by legislative authority. A tax "is not a voluntary payment or onation, but an enforced contribution, exacted pursuant to legislative authority" and is "any contribution imposed by government whether under the name of toll, tribute, tallage, gabel, impost, duty, custom, excise, subsidy, aid, supply, or other name." No where does it say that a Tax is "what you get for doing something right (or well)." It does however put more money in the pockets of government officials to spend frivolously and irresponsibly.
