Subject: My take on the Microsoft Vista Operating System
Hello Chathamites!
I have been asked about the new Vista operating system during numerous on-site service calls I have performed over the past several months so I thought I would take an opportunity to provide the chatlist members with my comments and recommendations.
There are several versions of the Vista Operating System. For home users the best option (and least expensive) is the HOME BASIC. There are also HOME PREMIUM, BUSINESS and ULTIMATE versions.
RECOMMENDED SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS:
If your current computer is less than a Pentium 4 3.0 GHz (or comparable AMD processor) with 1 GB of RAM, and at least an additional 20G of free space on the hard drive, then do not even CONSIDER the upgrade. Although these parameters are a bit more powerful than those listed on the Microsoft site, these are more accurate for a user that doesn't want to INCREASE their frustration with their computer use.
Ideally you should have 2GB of RAM and a 64-bit processor with a SATA or 7200 RPM IDE hard drive to really see the performance enhancement of Vista.
You MUST have a DVD-capable drive on your computer for the installation.
Additionally you must have at least a 128M video card (onboard or AGP/PCI Express).
PERIPHERAL COMPATIBILITY WITH VISTA:
This is likely going to be the area of most concern for any user considering upgrading to Vista from their existing operating system.
You should make a list of ALL of your peripherals to include: your printer, camera, iPod, scanner, multi-function unit, and/or any external or internal video capture or audio devices.
You can visit the individual manufacturer's web sites for each of your devices to determine their Vista compatibility. For any that are specifically not listed as being Vista compliant, then plan on replacing that item if you upgrade to Vista.
IF YOU ARE BUYING A NEW COMPUTER:
Any new computer you buy these days from a retail outlet will likely include the Vista operating system.
You should perform the same peripheral analysis as listed above BEFORE deciding to buy a new Vista computer.
Keep in mind that computers that are PRE-LOADED with the Vista operating system will also work with Windows XP so you have the option of buying the new computer and then reinstalling your existing XP operating system (or have Computer Therapy or another comparable computer service company perform the installation).
PRO's:
You can look these up for more specifics by googling "benefits of Vista".
Some of these will not be important to the average user but I thought I should list the more important ones.
RESTART MANAGER: updates and installations that usually require a restart can now be managed to allow the reboot process to be handled by the user;
CRASH MANAGEMENT: this might be more important to us as technicians, but it could save you money SHOULD your computer require service due to a DEVICE DRIVER that is causing an error with your computer's normal operation;
DATA MANAGEMENT: With the XP OS and prior, a clean installation meant backing up all of the files (which also means knowing where all of the data resides), and then having to reinstall EVERYTHING. The new Vista operating system has integrated processes that allow you (or us) to repair corrupt operating systems without as much labor associated with the backing up of the data files.
INTEGRATED FIREWALL: The firewall that is integrated into the current Windows XP operating system is more or less a ONE-WAY protection. It only protects items from getting IN to your computer. Many of you know
(unfortunately) that if you somehow get infiltrated by a spyware application, then there is no INTEGRATED protection from it contacting the "mothership" and all of its friends and you eventually end up with more and more spyware and malware and have to have it cleaned up in order to restore your computer to a functional state.
Windows Vista offers TWO-WAY protection by alerting you when an unknown application tries to access the Internet from your computer. Any of you that currently have the ZoneAlarm Free firewall or any of the paid firewall services (Symantec, McAfee, etc) are familiar with the process of being asked to authorize an outgoing Internet connection.
THE "SMART" START MENU: The start menu will "learn" your frequently used applications and provide you a more efficient means of access your programs as well as files/folders.
CONTENT VIEWING: This is one of my favorites. Imagine spending 2 hours creating a file, and then saving it to the appropriate document folder.
Then weeks or months later, you need to access that file. Do you remember the specific file name? the folder in which you saved the file? The new CONTENT VIEWING feature allows the user to see a synopsis of the file contents without actually having to open the file.
CON's:
As stated above, there are still numerous issues with peripherals that you may already own. Additionally, your computer may not be powerful enough to take full advantage of the benefits of the Vista operating system.
As with any new computer interface, there can be a slight learning curve (but as XP did with the older Windows versions) you can use some of the previous screens and menus for familiarity.
The Vista operating system has the DRM Technology integrated. This is the Integrated Digital Rights Management process that is designed to protect the copyright information of music and DVD/video content. Legally this is a great feature but there still seem to be some issues (and subsequently user
frustration) when a valid ownership is not recognized on a music or DVD file.

I see a lot of people on the chatlist that are looking for computer service.
I was coming home from work in Sanford and as I turned off of 15/501 onto Walter Bright Rd. I got behind a truck listing on the cap "In home computer service 356-4967." I didn't even wait until I got home, I called him on my cell phone. He came to my house the next day, took my ailing computer with him, reformatted the hard drive, fixed the sound, brought the computer back and loaded my printer. The cost for this? $75. I know that you pay $75 just to walk in the door of most computer repair establishments because I have been there and done that. My computer is working like a dream. Subject: Puppies for adoption
Hi all-
Last October a very pregnant lab came to our practice from death row at the shelter. She was too pregnant to be spayed, and so our assistant took her home to have puppies. Most of the ELEVEN puppies she had have been homed. We are so happy about that. We do have three puppies left that need homes. There is a minimal adoption fee, but they are all spayed/neutered and have all thier shots. They are cute as can be, and as lab as they come. Please feel free to call and set up a time to meet them, or, you can come by any time on Friday or Saturday (Friday hours are 8:30-5:30, Sat. is 8:30-12:30) and meet them. We would really like to find homes for them soon. Thier mom is a CARE dog, and is going to be spayed and hopefully homed in less than a month. I have a fine, healthy mixed-breed milk goat available for a new home.
This pretty girl - Caramel is what I call her - is a member of my meat goat herd, but she is a huge milk producer. Her kids failed to take the teat, and I do not have the time to milk her out, so I need to find a good new home for her, someone who will use the milk. (Her horns are too large to allow her to go into our dairy herd - she won't fit in the milking stand.)
By my judgement, she's producing between 3/4 and 1 gallon per day.
This will decline rapidly if she is not milked frequently. Thus some urgency.
Caramel freshened last Thursday. Gave birth to two big billies. One died, the other I managed to save from hypothermia and hypoglycemia after Sunday's cold winds, and I'm now bottle-feeding.
She's got a sweet disposition. She's not been handled much, but responds well to the feed bucket. Despite being raised as a meat-breeder, she milks well, once restrained. She does not kick.
Given her milk production and good health, I believe Caramel is worth $200, but am offering her for $150. I estimate she is 3/5ths Boer meat goat, 2/5ths Alpine dairy goat. Her bottle-fed baby is also available. He is predominatly Boer, judging from his coloring, and will make a good wether for eating, or a good breeder.

As a member of the American Institute of Parliamentarians (AIP), I wish to announce the Region V Biennial Conference and educational session in Charleston, SC, May 9-11, 2007. Anyone wishing to expand their understanding and vocabulary in parliamentary procedure will benefit greatly from attending the session. Our meetings occur every two years. The Region V encompasses southern states, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. We have 162 members and coordinate with the National Association of Parliamentarians (NAP).
Our members have included Floyd Riddick, author of the US Senate's rules of order and US Senate parliamentarian, Dr. Robert Dove, Georgetown University and US Senate parliamentarian, Dr. Eugene Bierbaum, Dr. Mark Schilansky among others. James Slaughter, a Greensboro attorney, is also a CPP-T and counsels many groups on procedure and rules as well as serving with the NAP.
The national organization hosts a practicum which offers an in depth study of rules in preparation for certification for the many levels of professional service held in Williamsburg on the campus of William & Mary

The main difference between the AIP and the NAP is the the AIP uses and studies all current rules and authors. The NAP uses only Roberts Rules of Order Newly Revised (RONR).

It’s kidding season at Celebrity Dairy, which means owners Brit and Fleming Pfann throw open their doors and invite the public to visit. Subject: Low Cost Spay Neuter Options for Chatham County Residents
Pet overpopulation is at crisis levels in Chatham County. There simply aren't enough good homes for all the dogs and cats born here every year.
We all bear the burden of this problem through increased costs for animal control.
Benefits of spaying or neutering go beyond population control. Fixed animals behave better and are healthier, including having reduced risks for many cancers.
Many folks recognize the benefits of fixing their pets but cannot afford to do so. To help, Chatham Animal Rescue and Education is offering subsidized spay/neuter clinics for Chatham County residents on public assistance or with household incomes below $40,000. Clinics will be held in March, April, May and June. Surgery will be done by Dr. Wendy Royce of Pet Overpopulation Patrol, a mobile veterinary practice, at Wal-Mart in Siler City. A $20 co-pay per animal is required.
Our next surgery date is March 24. Registration will take place
Saturday, March 17, from 9 to 12 at the Wal-Mart in Siler City. You
may also register for any future clinic at that time. If you can't attend the registration, please call C.A.R.E. at 542-5757.

Pony Camp
Also this year we are very excited about the "Pony Camp" for 3-6 year olds!
This will be at Cedar Hill Farms run by Cecelia King.
This camp runs from 8:30 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. Monday - Friday Ratio 1:4 or fewer $250 per week
Cecelia will also have riding lessons in the morning. They will be exploring different topics each week such as Caring for the Horse, Tools and Tack, Farm life...and much more.
I would encourage anyone with a small child who loves animals to speak with Cecelia about her camp. She is fabulous with children, an educated horsewoman, an amazing teacher, and has a great program planed.
And, of course, our horses are wonderful and child proof.

Hi Chatlisters,
It has come to my attention that there is some confusion over the one-time 'telephone excise credit' so I thought I would brief everyone.
After a series of defeats in 5 Federal Circuit Courts the government has 'given up' on charging an excise tax on 'telephonic communication for which there is a toll charge that varies with elapsed transmission time and not distance (time-only service)' based on Section 4252(b)(1) of the Internal Revenue Code.
The practical result for us taxpayers is that we can get a 'refund' of these taxes paid either by a one-time credit or by adding up these charges paid from our phone bills AFTER 2/28/2003 and BEFORE 8/01/2006.
Unless your phone bills are substantial (a business with extensive long-distance, etc) you are better off to take the one-time refund. This refund is based upon the number of exemptions claimed on your return: $30 for 1 exemption, $40 for 2 exemptions, $50 for 3 exemptions and $60 for 4 or more exemptions.
This credit should be entered on Line 71 on Form 1040, Line 42 on Form 1040A or Line 9 of 1040 EZ. Also, if you are not otherwise required to file a return, there is a new Form 1040EZ-T to request a refund of this tax.
If you want to claim the actual tax you paid, you must fill out Form 8913 which is a detailed report of taxes you paid and calculation of your refund amount. If you choose this route, make sure you do it correctly. There has been a lot of fraud involved with this form and the IRS is scrutinizing them all very closely!
If you missed this credit on your already filed return, you can claim it by amending your return with a Form 1040X. Fill it out and add in the excise tax refund you are entitled to on Line 18 of this form and in Part II, Explanation of Changes, write 'telephone excise tax'.
